Chocolate and Heart Health
Dark chocolate and cocoa powder contain antioxidant compounds called Flavanols, which are linked to heart benefits. Research has shown that eating small amounts of dark chocolate or cocoa powder daily can lower blood pressure. Studies have also revealed decreases in “bad” LDL cholesterol, and decreased risk of heart attack and stroke.
Vitamins and Supplements for Heart Health
A healthy diet, exercise, and good lifestyle habits go a long way towards decreasing your risk factors for heart disease and preventing stroke. Certain supplements can lend a helping hand. Omega-3 Fatty Acids are found in fish oils and flaxseed oil, and can help to decrease triglyceride levels and increase “good” HDL cholesterol levels. Niacin, also known as Vitamin B3 or Nicotinic Acid, can decrease triglyceride levels, increase HDL levels, and to a lesser degree decrease LDL levels. However, some people may experience hot flashes as a side effect. Coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10, is naturally formed and found in every cell in the body. Supplements may be helpful for people with heart failure, who have been found to have lower levels of CoQ10. Vitamin B12, Folic Acid and Iron contribute to healthy red blood cell production.
